If it seems you are hearing about the value of good South Texas Citrus Fruit in your diet and for gift giving during the holidays, it may be due to the annual emphasis brought to bear by members of The Northwest Austin Rotary Club. Annually for the past 13 years, members have provided the opportunity for Austinites to buy boxes of oranges and grapefruit. The citrus, picked fresh from the groves of South Texas for delivery during the first week in December, is distributed to all the loyal customers who placed orders with their favorite Rotarian during the months of October and November.
Each year since 1996 this fruit sale has provided the funds for this Rotary Club to give back to our Community in the form of:
- Eight scholarships to graduating Seniors of Westwood and McNeil High Schools
- Fifteen Cash Awards to Teacher of the Year from RRISD schools in our NW Austin Area
- Fifteen Cash Awards to the Outstanding Paraprofessionals from RRISD schools in our NW Austin Area
- Donations to numerous Community and Civic service projects such as:
- The House of Friends an Alzheimer Caregivers respite program in our Community
- The Bluebonnet Trails MHMR annual Holiday Breakfast and Christmas Party.
- In partnership with the Austin Exchange Club we support scholarships for disabled students.
- Contributions to Scouting in our Community
- Various other Civic and International monetary commitments made during the year.
The funding for these Gifts Back to our Community comes entirely from the proceeds of this annual fruit sale.
In 1996, the NW Austin Rotary Club, located at the Balcones Country Club since 1980, embarked upon the first annual fruit sale with $6,200 in sales. Eleven years later in 2007 sales were $82,200. Every year since the inception of this fundraiser, sales have increased and in every year this Club has been 100% in participation of its membership. This is truly a team effort!
To continue providing appreciation to our Community for the many, many “jobs well done,” this Rotary Club has established for 2008 an objective of $92,000 in sales. You will hear from these Rotarians during these next few weeks, so be prepared to dig down and buy this great Texas product which is sold and distributed by great Texas Rotarians to our great Texas Customers… you.
