Bluebonnet Trails Community MHMR Center
The club has sponsored the Bluebonnet Trails Community MHMR Center since the 1986-87 Rotary year. After land for the Leander Rehabilitation Center, our first local sponsorship, was sold, the club advertised in local newspapers for new community service projects to sponsor. Nancy Smith, a parent associated with then the Hill Country Day Activity Center noticed our ad and had the director contact us.
The Bluebonnet Trails Community MHMR Center was formed to administer mental health and metal retardation services in eight central Texas counties. The Hill Country Workshop became part of the Day Activity Center housed in the Bluebonnet Trails Round Rock facility. It serves mentally challenged clients in WIlliamson County, many of whom live in the NW Austin Rotary Club service area. The Center services an area with a population of approximately 650,000 people.
Each year, our club holds a Christmas Party for the patrons, parents and professionals of the Center. Santa and his helpers, lately volunteers from Westwood High School's Interact Club of future Rotarians, pass out personalized presents chosen specifically for each guest. Entertainment has been provided in recent years by the Bethany Methodist Church Handbell Choir. A joyous time is had by all as the room is filled with joy the spirit of the season.
