Four Avenues of Service - Club Service
click to print this pageprint this page

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one's circle of business and professional acquaintances. Club members represent a cross-section of the community's business owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals--people who make decisions and influence policy.

Some of the Club Service activities hosted by the Northwest Austin Rotary Club include the annual Progressive Dinner and Holiday Party, as well as dinner and theater outings during the year. Through these events, club members, family members, co-workers and friends have an opportunity to socialize, build fellowship and develop new relationships. Each July the club recognizes the incoming officers at the festive “Installation Picnic”. In addition the club holds “Fireside” meetings periodically to allow members to get to know one another in a smaller group setting.

The avenue of Club Service also encompasses those activities necessary to make the Club function successfully and achieve its goals. These activities include:
- Membership: Seeking out potential new members and retaining existing members

- Classifications
- Fundraising
- Communications and Public Relations (including photographers, bulletin and website)

- Weekly Programs

- The Rotary Foundation

- NWAR Endowment Fund

Program Committee
Members: David Davis, Chuck Durant, Bill Estes, Paul Ott, Ray Roark and Tony Thompson

Mission: To schedule timely, interesting and informative Programs for Northwest Austin Rotary Club (NWARC). The Committee attempts to follow the Rotary International Monthly emphasis calendar, accommodate the desires of our President for specific programs and evaluate suggested Programs made by our Club members and to our Club through our Committee members.

Operation: The Committee attempts to schedule Programs at least a month and up to three months in advance of our Club weekly meetings. The Committee maintains a yearly calendar of Programs, keeping days where no meeting will be held (i.e. Holidays, parties, etc.) and days allocated to other activities (i.e. Firesides, Citrus Kick-off, etc.). The Committee also keeps a list of potential Programs to work from and a list of Programs/Speakers who can do “last minute” or “move up” adjustments. The Committee sends or insures a “Thank You” is sent to each Speaker.

Guidelines: The Committee operates to avoid political speeches, religious speeches, one-sided presentations, too many Programs from the same environment (i.e. medical, technical, etc.), and too many “requests for funds” Programs in addition to its mission to have timely, interesting and informative Programs.

Committee members are expected and asked to introduce our Programs at a meeting. They are also expected to comment on any potential program openly and with forethought to aide in insuring we meet our mission. Committee members may be called upon to collect the information necessary to insure our Speakers are prepared, to insure our Committee is prepared and to insure our Club is prepared for a particular Program.

Preparations: The Committee contacts the Speaker at least a week in advance of their Program to understand what equipment is needed, and passes it on to our Sargent-at-Arms; to collect a couple of paragraphs on what the Speaker is going to present, and passes it on to the editor of the “Rooter” for a “take away” for our Club members and guests; and to collect a short bio of professional and personal items to be used by person introducing the Speaker at the meeting, and passes it on to all Committee members.

Evaluations: Committee members contact recommended Programs/Speakers to insure the Program will meet our Mission. The Committee members will tell potential Programs if they are not going to be considered further.
